COMMENT: Increasing allergies and asthma may be due to the more sterile environments that we are living in. A possible cause of this may be widespread continued use of antibiotics, anti-bacterial soap, and vaccinations. This theory, known as the "hygiene hypothesis" has been discussed in various medical journals recently. Other reasons of course, include all the environmental toxins that we are exposed to, for example: solvents, pesticides and heavy metals, such as mercury. Vaccinations and unresolved emotional stresses are also likely significant factors in most individuals.

It is also known that many Autistic children suffer from Asthma. Autistics are more likely to have allergies, asthma, selective IgA deficiency (sIgAd), enhanced expression of HLA-DR antigen, and an absence of interleukin-2 receptors, as well as familial autoimmunity and a variety of autoimmune phenomena. These include elevated serum IgG and ANA titers, IgM and IgG brain antibodies, and myelin basic protein (MBP) antibodies (103-110).

Similarly, atypical responses to Hg have been ascribed to allergic or autoimmune reactions (8), and genetic predisposition to such reactions may explain why Hg sensitivity varies so widely by individual (88,111). Children who developed acrodynia were more likely to have asthma and other allergies (11); IgG brain autoantibodies, MBP, and ANA have been found in HgP subjects (18,111,112); and mice genetically prone to develop autoimmune diseases "are highly susceptible to mercury-induced immunopathological alterations" even at the lowest doses (113).

Additionally, many autistics have reduced natural killer cell (NK) function, as well as immune-cell subsets shifted in a Th2 direction and increased urine neopterin levels, indicating immune system activation (103,114-116). Depending upon genetic predisposition, Hg can induce immune activation, an expansion of Th2 subsets, and decreased NK activity (117-120).

The trend of using inhaled steroid medications for asthma continues to increase.
The main pharmaceutical solution most often prescribed is ventolin. However, consider the side affects of pharmaceutical drugs!

Less common side effects may include:
Chest pain (sometimes crushing) or discomfort, difficulty urinating, drowsiness, dry mouth and throat, flushing, high blood pressure, muscle spasm, restlessness, sweating, unusual taste, vertigo, weaknes

The foregoing information is particularly depressing for the millions of asthma sufferers worldwide, but perhaps there is an answer...

For several generations an herbal secret has been the preserve of the Yamoa family in Ghana West Africa.

The sound of chesty coughs and asthmatic wheezing would be heard outside Ma Yamoah’s house. The long line of people young and old travelled far to receive a consultation from Ma Yamoa (known by the name Afua).

Everyone was dispensed the same powder. They went away, but very few came back again. Many experienced a dramatic cessation of the painful and debilitating symptoms of asthma and bronchial irritation after using this innocuous looking powder.

The local doctor attached to the nearby hospital would often send his incurable cases to her –- and would often call round in person. The doctor tried many times to ask Afua what was this powder, but she refused to divulge.

This was the scenario witnessed by Jerry Yamoa, grandson of Afua. As Jerry grew up in Accra Ghana, he was particularly impressed and was fascinated by his grandmother’s extensive knowledge of trees, roots and barks.

As a young man Jerry trained to be a primary school teacher. His ambition was to create a life for himself in England. Eventually he immigrated there, settling in south London. For many years Jerry worked for the post office.
